We love our families, and we even provide services for parents before your baby is born! Once you’re expecting, we encourage you to schedule a prenatal visit and tour our office. We can provide you with hospital and delivery information as well as recommended readings to help you prepare for your special delivery. Once your baby arrives if you are struggling with breastfeeding, Dr. Caplan and Dr. Wiersma, official lactation consultants, can help and schedules lactation visits for any babies in our practice. And of course we are experts at newborn care.

Dr. Matthew Barcellona was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California. He grew up with a passion for playing baseball. That love continued at Chapman University where he was Captain of the baseball team and an Academic All-American. In addition, Dr. Barcellona has an affinity for photography. He loves the thrill of capturing a beautiful moment of our earth’s unique landscape and the challenge of photographing animals in their natural habitat. In fact, most of photos hanging in our Deer Valley location are Dr. B originals!
Since joining North Scottsdale Pediatrics in 2007, Dr. Barcellona has enthusiastically embraced his role as a community pediatrician and physician leader. In addition to delivering compassionate care to his patients, he served as the president of the Greater Phoenix Pediatric Society and on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. When asked what he loves about pediatrics, “Dr. B” says he most enjoys making a personal connection with each of his patients and their families to make the experience at the doctor’s office as enjoyable as possible.
On his days off, you might stumble upon Dr. B and his wife, Dawn taking their son, Isaac, on an epic adventure.

Kay joins our practice with nearly 20 years of pediatric experience. Originally from Michigan, she moved to the Phoenix area after getting married in late 2023. She has a broad range of experience including Pediatric Primary Care, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and Neurosurgery. Kay loves to share her passion for pediatrics and has been an Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Michigan State University assisting undergraduate nursing students during their pediatric clinical experience. She has a special interest in sports medicine and newborn care. Kay says that her favorite thing about working in pediatrics is building relationships with her patients and their families.
In her free time, Kay enjoys coaching volleyball, traveling to new places, spending time with her family, and cheering on her beloved Spartans!

Dr. Caplan has been practicing pediatrics since 2003 with North Scottsdale Pediatrics. She has a special interest in supporting breastfeeding moms and babies, but enjoys all aspects of pediatric care from birth to early adulthood.
Dr. Caplan is happily married and has two daughters and a cat. She resides in Scottsdale with her family and enjoys traveling, knitting, birdwatching, and being a foodie (both at home and while traveling.)

Dr. Catharine (Katie) Cesal grew up in Phoenix and has known from a very young age that she enjoys taking care of others. She found a home at North Scottsdale Pediatrics upon finishing residency and has been part of the team since 2000. She mentors young physician residents through Phoenix Children’s Hospital, several of whom have joined the practice.
Dr. Cesal is happily married with two teenage daughters, one in college and one in high school. She enjoys Spicy Asian food, walking her poodle Tofu and the ballet. She is trilingual and enjoys speaking conversational Spanish and Mandarin with patients. She feels privileged to care for patients of all ages from newborns to young adults.

Dr. Jennifer Cropp is originally from Northeast Ohio but moved to Phoenix to escape the cold and snowy winters. She has been practicing pediatrics since 2013. When asked about what she enjoys most about pediatrics, Dr. Cropp says she loves the relationships she builds with families over the years through caring for children from the newborn period through childhood, adolescence and then transitioning them to adulthood.
Dr. Cropp currently serves as lead physician for the Deer Valley location as well as on the Patient Education Committee for Pediatric Associates and on the Quality and Metrics Committee for Arbor Medical Partners.
She and her husband, also a physician, have two boys who keep them very busy as well as a Yorkipoo, who is a constant ball of energy. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, trying new places to eat, spending time with family, and watching her kids play and grow.

Dr. Rose De Grauw – Mare was born in the Netherlands but moved to the Midwest at a young age. Since the completion of her medical training, she found herself in New York caring for kids and families for over 8 years. However, warm weather was calling, and she moved to Phoenix with her family where she is continuing her passion for pediatrics. She enjoys watching her patients grow from infancy through adolescence and being able to be a part of that journey.
In her downtime, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Peter, and their daughter Daisy. They love to be in the kitchen making homemade pizza and rooting for the New York Mets.

Dr. Tyler Dirvonas grew up in the East Valley in Gilbert. After venturing to Texas then Tennessee for his medical training, he was drawn back to the crisp dry heat of Arizona. When asked about what he loves about pediatrics, Dr. Dirvonas says he enjoys spending the time to get to know patients and families and making sure that parents feel comfortable with all aspects of their child’s health.
Dr. Dirvonas is married to Caitlin, a pharmacist. When he is not spending time with his wife and dogs, he enjoys playing soccer, running, reading and watching his Arizona Wildcats dominate on the basketball court. Bear Down!

Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, Samantha began her nursing career at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in 2012 in pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant. After completing her doctorate degree at Arizona State University in 2015, she moved to Charlotte, NC to work as a nurse practitioner in pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant. Although she loved the city of Charlotte and especially the great BBQ, she missed the hot, dry summers of AZ and ultimately relocated back to Scottsdale in 2018 with her husband. Since then, she has been working as a nurse practitioner in pediatric primary care. One of her favorite things about working in pediatrics is getting to build relationships with her patients and families over many years.
When she isn’t working, Samantha enjoys spending time with her husband, Sam, and dog, Blue. She also enjoys traveling, hiking, and reading in her free time.

Dr. Lisa Engel has been with North Scottsdale Pediatrics since 2005. She serves as our lab director and oversees our quality assurance program. Dr. Engel has an interest in asthma and developed our asthma follow-up program. She also heads up our allergy testing program.
She is married to Dr. Richard Engel, a pediatrician who works as a hospitalist. They have two children, Melissa and Matthew. They love cooking together, traveling and enjoying music.

Karen is our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who joins us with over 30 years of pediatric experience. She has a broad range of experience in pediatric primary care, pediatric cardiology, hemophilia and general pediatric development and behavior. She has a special interest in promoting whole and healthy lifestyles in children and their families. Karen has served as the Chairman of the obesity committee for the Arizona Academy of Pediatrics, and has been an Associate Clinical Faculty member at Arizona State University with responsibility for clinical education of nurse practitioner graduate students and undergraduate courses in healthcare ethics.
Karen is married with two grown children and one granddaughter. She enjoys time with family and friends, running and hiking.

Dr. Jennifer Gerlach was born and raised in Hudson, Ohio and grew up quite a competitive tennis player, receiving a college scholarship and was GTE Academic All American, OAC 1st singles and 1st doubles champion, and was ranked #4 in the Midwest. After she moved to Phoenix and joined our practice, her keen clinical skills have surpassed even her tennis skills.
Dr. Gerlach is married to Dr. Jason Sherman, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Southwest Spine and Sports in Scottsdale. She has two children, Jacob and Elliott, and enjoys hiking, playing tennis, and spending time with family.

Dr. Adrienne Kurland has been with our North Scottsdale Pediatric team since 2012. She had worked as a health educator for Chicago Health Corps/AmeriCorps and as Development Manager for Chicago Cares, a non-profit organization focused on education, health and wellness services for children and adults. She was also a member of the medical staff at Carl Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix.
Dr. Kurland is certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics but embraced her love of pediatrics by joining our practice. She has been very involved with building our young adult/adolescent program but loves all aspects of pediatrics, from newborn care to adolescent care. Dr. Kurland also serves on the faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix as an Associate Professor teaching physical examination.
Dr. Kurland is married to Brett, and they have two children, a son and a daughter, so she has her own pediatric experience at home! She enjoys hiking, literature, travel, community service and advocacy.

Dr. Lin was born and raised in Southern California. She pursued her undergraduate degree as far away as possible in New York and then started her quest back to the west coast by attending medical school at Creighton and finishing her first two years in Omaha, Nebraska. Her 3rd and 4th years of medical school were done in Phoenix, AZ – her first introduction to the desert. After graduating, she moved back home for residency at the UCI/CHOC program. She is excited to be back in Arizona and excited to build relationships with her patients and their families – her absolute favorite part of pediatrics.
When out of the office, she loves being outdoors with her fiancé, Brian – whether it be running, hiking, or occasionally backpacking. She also loves exploring new places to eat, so if you have any suggestions, send them her way!

Dr. Courtney Mattia was born in Chicago and moved to Phoenix when she was a toddler. She completed her undergraduate degree at Loyola University Chicago and medical school at Creighton University. She was excited to move back home to complete her Pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Alliance with experiences at both Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Valleywise Health. Dr. Mattia was drawn to Pediatrics at a young age. Her younger brother has Trisomy 21, and she appreciated the support and guidance her family received from his Pediatrician. Pediatrics is special to her because of the opportunity to help children as they grow and develop. She is grateful for the chance to form close connections with both children and their families to provide them with the care they need.
Dr. Mattia lives with her husband, Donny, a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow, and their son, Vincent. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family outdoors – hiking, playing at parks, and taking day trips around Arizona. She also enjoys crafting, cooking, and trying out the local cuisine. She is excited to be working in the community that has given her so many opportunities.

Dr. Colin Petranu grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago but decided he needed warmer weather, so he moved to Phoenix and joined our practice after his residency training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Dr. Petranu has quickly become a hit with our patients with his caring, cool, friendly demeanor. He enjoys getting to know his patients and their family and building long lasting relationships with them.
Dr. Petranu is married and has three amazing children. He and his wife enjoy hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants and spending time with their two dogs and three cats. He loves being active and is an avid basketball and sand volleyball player. He can often be found going to the gym, spending time with friends, and watching his favorite Chicago sports teams. Dr. Sherry Pottgen is a native of Arizona and has been a part of the North Scottsdale Pediatrics team since 2010. She has special interests in the care of the newborn, nutrition/feeding issues, skin care and allergies.
Dr. Pottgen is happily married and has two children and a cat. She resides in North Scottsdale with her family and enjoys traveling, photography, interior design and volunteering at her kids’ schools.

Dr. Rogan has been with North Scottsdale Pediatrics since 2021. Prior to moving to Arizona, she practiced in Minnesota as well as Colorado. Dr. Rogan enjoys all aspects of pediatrics from newborn care to the transition to adulthood. She is married to Dr. Michael Rogan, an interventional radiologist. They have three children, ranging from middle school to college. They enjoy hiking, traveling and spending time back in Minnesota by the lake.

Dr. Jeff Siegel has been in practice at North Scottsdale Pediatrics since 1998. He has been very involved in the pediatric community, serving as Chairman of Pediatrics at Honor Health Shea Hospital. He enjoys speaking to elementary students and getting them excited about science and medicine.
Dr. Siegel is the most tech savvy of the group and is committed to keeping our practice on the cutting-edge of technology. He introduced our practice to electronic medical records before most practices in the Valley and continues to update our system to include the patient portal which allows patients to access some of their medical records, request medication refills and schedule appointments online.
Dr. Siegel has been married over 20 years to Jennifer, an artist, and they have two teenage boys, Jack and Josh, who have taught him invaluable lessons he uses in his practice everyday. When not working, you can find him spending time with his boys drumming in a rock band or hiking with his wife.

Dr. Rebecca Smith grew up in Phoenix, AZ. She also attended University of Arizona for both undergraduate training and medical school. She completed her pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center.
After residency, her family relocated to Oregon for a few years but is returning to their home state of Arizona. Dr. Smith and her husband have 2 wonderful daughters. Dr. Smith enjoys family get togethers and BBQs as well as reading and sewing in her spare time.
Dr. Smith has a special clinical interest in areas of lactation and endocrinopathies (hormonal disorders) in addition to general pediatrics.

Dr. Sarah Wiersmagrew up in the Scottsdale area and joined our North Scottsdale Pediatrics family after completing her residency training in Tucson. Dr. Wiersma was one of the top residents at the University of Arizona who was a leader in her class and very involved in community programs to promote literacy, oral health and car seat safety.
Dr. Wiersma’s favorite part of pediatrics is following children and their families over time and watching them grow. Her patients find her caring, passionate, and thorough. She has particular interests in the areas of breastfeeding medicine, asthma management, and helping manageskin problems like eczema and acne. Shehas completed the training required to be a lactation consultant (IBCLC) to provide the best support to parents who choose to breastfeed.She is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is the Vice Chair of Pediatrics for the Honor Health Network.
When she’s not working, Dr. Wiersma enjoys running, sewing, and baking. She lives with her husband, Josh, and sons, Daniel and Ben.

Dr. Vivian Ziltzer has been with North Scottsdale Pediatrics since 1991. She has been an integral part of the growth and administration of the practice and is currently running the practice full-time. For 25 years, she loved taking care of patients and was involved in the community serving as Chairman of the Perinatal Committee and then Chairman of Pediatrics for Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Hospital. Dr. Ziltzer now focuses her time on keeping the standards of care and quality high at North Scottsdale Pediatrics and staying current with the latest in technology and medical developments that continue to enhance patient care. Whenever she can, she makes custom birthday and special occasion cakes for her family and friends.
Dr. Ziltzer is married to Rob, who is a medical weight loss specialist in his own practice, Scottsdale Weight Loss Center. She is a proud parent of two happy and successful young adults.
